Jay Cutler is thrilled to have new money.
Cedric Benson is thrilled to be a Bengal.
Pisa Tinoisamoa is out for the season.
It was that kind of day at Halas Hall, where countless storylines emerged in advance of the Sunday kickoff in Cincinnati.
The $30 million Cutler contract extension comes after his agent Bus Cook decided now was a good time for a deal. He contacted the Bears and they have been working on a plan for a while.
“We’re building something that’s gonna last,” said Bears General Manager Jerry Angelo. “We’re not knee-jerk here. It’s not a one-year plan and we’re not going to make decisions based on desperation. We’ve also been consistent with that philosophy.”
Cutler was clear about wanting to finish his career with the Bears. He also believes now that he is locked up for five years, the Bears can move forward in building the team.
“Anytime you want to do a deal like that and you want to stay in place for a long time, you want to make sure there committed to bringing in the right pieces and the right guys and I think they are.”
Wednesday Practice Review: Bengals Week
v Cedric Benson is a new man. He is running hard and running well with the second most yards in the league on the most attempts. He insinuated the Bears blackballed him after his release. Lovie Smith disagreed. In fact, Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Smith gave Benson a good review.
v There is no change in the starting offensive line. Frank Omiyale remains the starting left guard. He was asked if the criticism of the offensive line has been fair this week. “I don’t look at fair. It is what it is. We know that all-in-all we’re all we got and we have to stick together through thick and thin.”
v Pisa Tinoisamoa is out for the season. He needs surgery on his right knee. Hunter Hillenmeyer could replace him at linebacker, but was limited Wednesday recovering from cracked ribs.
v Tommie Harris (knee) and Adrian Peterson(knee) did not practice.
v Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said short yardage difficulties are an offensive-wide problem. “I think it’s just a matter of all of us getting in synch. It’s not just one guy. It’s all of us.”
v Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco is genuinely impressed with Charles Tillman’s work against Detroit’s Calvin Johnson and Atlanta’s Roddy White. “I’ve been studying film on Peanut. He’s really, really good, man. He’s put up some shut downs on some pretty good, top receivers. It’s going to be a fun, interesting match-up come Sunday.”
